CoinGecko MCP alternatives
CoinGecko's official MCP server gives an agent real-time crypto prices, market data, and on-chain DEX analytics through two tools, search_docs and execute. It covers crypto well. It says nothing about equities, fundamentals, macro data, or your brokerage account, which is where most of these alternatives come in.
The servers below cover the rest of the financial-data map: public-company filings, stock and forex quotes, economic series, and live trading. A few overlap with CoinGecko on crypto pricing; the rest answer a different question entirely. Each note says which.
The 8 best alternatives
Public-company disclosure, not crypto. The SEC EDGAR server connects an agent to filings, XBRL financials, and insider trading with exact numeric precision, reading filing content and company facts that CoinGecko never touches.
Set up SEC EDGAR →Yahoo Finance data for stocks: historical prices, fundamentals, financial statements, options chains, holder info, and news. It is the equities counterpart to CoinGecko's crypto pricing, and it runs locally.
Set up Yahoo Finance →Breadth is the pitch here: 250+ financial data tools over the Financial Modeling Prep API, spanning fundamentals, statements, quotes, news, and filings, organized into toolsets you enable as needed.
Set up Financial Modeling Prep →Macro rather than market. The FRED server reaches all 800,000+ Federal Reserve economic data series through fred_browse, fred_search, and fred_get_series, for rates, inflation, and employment data instead of asset prices.
Set up FRED →Twelve Data's official server spans real-time and historical market data, fundamentals, and 100+ technical indicators across global markets, with a hosted option, so it reaches further into equities and forex than CoinGecko's crypto focus.
Set up Twelve Data →- AlpacaOfficial
This one trades. Alpaca's official server lets an agent buy and sell stocks, options, and crypto, manage positions, and pull market data, where CoinGecko only reads. It runs locally against your Alpaca account.
Set up Alpaca → - Alpha VantageOfficial
Alpha Vantage's official server returns real-time and historical stock, forex, crypto, and economic data through time-series tools like TIME_SERIES_DAILY and GLOBAL_QUOTE, overlapping CoinGecko on crypto while adding equities and forex.
Set up Alpha Vantage → - PlaidOfficial
An adjacent tool, not a market-data feed. Plaid's official Dashboard server debugs Items, pulls Link analytics, and checks API usage, useful if you build on Plaid rather than if you want price quotes.
Set up Plaid →
How to choose
Pick by asset class and intent. CoinGecko stays the cleanest read for crypto prices and DEX analytics. For equities and statements, reach for yfinance or Financial Modeling Prep; Twelve Data and Alpha Vantage add forex and indicators across both. FRED is the choice for macro series, and Alpaca is the only one here that places orders rather than just reading data. Plaid is the outlier, aimed at debugging a Plaid integration.
FAQ
- Which CoinGecko alternative covers stocks instead of crypto?
- yfinance and Financial Modeling Prep are the most direct for equities: prices, fundamentals, and financial statements. Twelve Data and Alpha Vantage cover stocks too, plus forex and technical indicators, and both also return crypto data if you want one server for several asset classes.
- Can any of these place trades rather than only read prices?
- Alpaca is the one that trades. Its official server can buy and sell stocks, options, and crypto and manage positions against your account. The rest, including CoinGecko, are read-only market-data and research servers.
